SolarSCO₂ol Project

The SolarSCO₂ol (EVORA-SCO₂ol) R&D project is focused on the development and validation of advanced solar power generation solutions based on supercritical CO₂ technology (CSP), integrating thermal energy storage and control systems to improve energy efficiency and sustainability. Funded by the European Union, the project is being developed in Portugal as a pilot concentrated solar power plant.

Magtel is involved in the assembly and integration of the pilot plant, which incorporates a 2 MW supercritical CO₂ turbine as a key element for technological validation. The initiative aims to reduce water consumption, emissions and operating costs, supporting the transition towards more efficient, sustainable and decarbonised energy systems.

Objectives

  • Develop and validate a Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) system based on supercritical CO₂ technology.
  • Increase energy conversion efficiency compared with conventional steam cycles.
  • Reduce water consumption and operating costs in concentrated solar power plants.
  • Contribute to the decarbonisation of the energy sector through advanced renewable energy solutions.

Expected Results

  • A validated CSP plant prototype based on a supercritical CO₂ cycle.
  • Technical guidelines to support large-scale deployment.
  • Significant reductions in water consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Contribution to European renewable energy and climate neutrality targets.
