Magtel has contributed to the report “Accelerating Energy Storage for Decarbonisation and Electrification”, promoted by Alinnea, an organisation specialising in analysing and identifying solutions to accelerate climate action in Spain. The document is the result of a collaborative process carried out between April and July 2026, involving more than 50 representatives from companies, public administrations, financial institutions, research centres and sector organisations.
Representing Magtel, Arturo Buenaventura, the company’s Director of Hydraulics and Environment, participated in the Energy Storage Working Group, which was tasked with analysing the sector’s key challenges and proposing measures to accelerate its development in Spain.
The report concludes that energy storage has become a critical infrastructure for the energy transition, enabling greater integration of renewable generation, increasing the flexibility of the electricity system, reducing energy curtailment and strengthening security of supply. It also identifies regulatory, financial, technological and territorial barriers that continue to hinder the implementation of new projects.
Among the most significant findings highlighted in the report is the target set out in Spain’s National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) to reach 22.5 GW of energy storage capacity by 2030, a figure considered necessary to support the electrification of the Spanish economy. The report also notes that the PNIEC forecasts that around 81% of electricity generation will come from renewable sources by the end of the decade, increasing the need for systems capable of providing flexibility and operational management within the power grid.
The report also outlines a roadmap to accelerate the deployment of energy storage, including measures to improve regulation, strengthen project financing, develop capacity mechanisms and promote long-duration energy storage technologies.
Magtel’s participation in this working group places the company at the heart of an important sector-wide discussion on one of the major challenges of the energy transition. The report concludes that the future development of energy storage will depend not only on the addition of new capacity, but also on the creation of a regulatory, economic and financial framework capable of turning existing investor interest into viable projects that contribute to the decarbonisation and electrification of the Spanish economy.
