The company now has seven Euro6000 electric locomotives, 150 specialised wagons for semi-trailer transport, and the concession to operate at the Port of Algeciras rail terminal. The only remaining step before launching the service is the completion of the necessary infrastructure works.
Eco Raíl, a subsidiary of Magtel, has completed the operational preparation of the Algeciras-Zaragoza rail motorway after finalising, through Rail&Truck, the delivery of all rolling stock required to launch the service. The company now operates a fleet comprising seven Euro6000 electric locomotives, manufactured by Stadler, and 150 T4000e wagons specifically designed for the intermodal transport of semi-trailers.
With the addition of these assets, the project has reached full operational readiness. At present, the start of commercial operations depends solely on the completion of the railway infrastructure adaptation works currently being carried out by Adif along the corridor.
The newly acquired fleet will enable the operation of trains capable of carrying up to 30 semi-trailers per journey, encouraging a shift of freight transport from road to rail and contributing to a more efficient, competitive and sustainable logistics model. This solution will reduce the environmental impact of freight transport while strengthening connectivity between the main logistics hubs in southern and north-eastern Spain.
The Algeciras-Zaragoza corridor is one of Spain’s key strategic routes for the development of intermodal transport, linking the Port of Algeciras with the Zaragoza Logistics Platform and facilitating the integration of freight flows between North Africa, the Iberian Peninsula and the rest of Europe. The project has been promoted by Eco Raíl and its partners with the aim of providing an efficient and sustainable alternative to road transport.
In addition to the rolling stock, the initiative benefits from another crucial strategic asset: the concession to operate the Isla Verde Interior rail terminal at the Port of Algeciras. Managed by Rail & Truck Strait Union, this concession also includes authorisation to provide railway services, further consolidating a key infrastructure asset for the current and future development of the rail motorway.
The availability of locomotives, specialised wagons and terminal capacity places Eco Raíl in a strong position to begin operating the rail motorway as soon as the planned infrastructure works are completed. It also provides the company with the capability to extend this intermodal transport model to other strategic corridors, reinforcing its commitment to logistics innovation, decarbonisation and the development of sustainable mobility solutions for freight transport.
