Magtel Attends the Inauguration of Andalusia’s First Biomethane Plant

Magtel, a leading company in technological innovation and sustainability, strengthens its commitment to the energy transition by joining the Andalusian Biomethane Business Cluster as a founding member. This initiative, promoted by leading companies in the sector, aims to drive the implementation of more than 100 biomethane plants in Andalusia over the next five years, with an investment exceeding €2.5 billion and the creation of up to 1,500 direct jobs.

The cluster was created to build a solid business and technological ecosystem around biomethane, a key renewable energy source for decarbonisation and the circular economy. In addition to Magtel, the group includes major companies such as AGR Biogás, Ence, Inerco, Moeve, Naturgy, Nortegas Renovables, Redexis and Vorn, which will contribute their expertise in different areas to accelerate the development of this energy source.

This commitment is reinforced by the recent inauguration of Andalusia’s first agro-industrial biomethane plant, located in La Calahorra (Granada), attended by Magtel’s Director of Hydraulics and Environment, Arturo Buenaventura, and the Biogas Project Manager, Pedro Ignacio de Rojas. The project, led by AGR Biogás, represents an investment of €25 million and will process 104,000 tonnes of agricultural and livestock waste annually, generating 58 GWh of biomethane—enough to supply more than 11,000 households. It will also prevent the emission of 23,000 tonnes of CO₂, equivalent to planting 920,000 trees, and create 5 direct and 25 indirect jobs in the region.

The plant, the first in Andalusia with direct injection into the gas network, marks a milestone in the deployment of biomethane as a sustainable solution for the agricultural sector and for the decarbonisation of the region. During the inauguration, institutional representatives and stakeholders from the primary sector highlighted the value of this project as an example of circular bioeconomy and as a benchmark for future facilities in the region.

Through its participation in the cluster and support for initiatives such as La Calahorra, Magtel reaffirms its leadership in innovation and sustainability, contributing to a cleaner, more competitive energy model aligned with European objectives.
