Magtel has been selected as a finalist at the RenMAD Energy Storage Awards 2026 thanks to the La Barca Pumped‑Storage Hydropower Plant, one of the company’s strategic projects in the field of energy storage and renewable integration within the Spanish power system.
The La Barca Pumped‑Storage Hydropower Plant, located in Tineo (Asturias), is an infrastructure designed to provide dispatchability, firmness and stability to the power system. With an installed capacity of 320 MW, an energy storage capacity of 4,092 MWh and a discharge duration of 12.79 hours, the plant will enable the efficient integration of energy from non‑dispatchable renewable sources, reducing curtailment and strengthening security of supply.
In addition, it will achieve an annual energy output of 571 GWh, enough to supply the electricity consumption of 176,200 households, equivalent to approximately 38.8% of Asturian homes. Through this contribution, La Barca will directly support the decarbonisation of the power system and the development of a more robust and sustainable energy model.
This facility will become a key asset in balancing the growing penetration of renewable energy with the need to ensure quality, continuity and resilience in the operation of the national power system.
Part of Blue Storage®, Magtel’s pioneering pumped‑storage energy model
The La Barca project is part of Blue Storage®, Magtel’s strategic initiative based on pumped‑storage hydropower plants designed for large‑scale energy storage. This model makes it possible to harness surplus renewable energy to pump water to an upper reservoir and subsequently release it during periods of higher demand, generating dispatchable, flexible and emission‑free energy.
Blue Storage® has become one of Magtel’s key technological pillars, integrating hydropower engineering, advanced operational solutions and an environmentally responsible approach. The initiative already comprises dozens of projects under development across different regions of the country and has been recognized in previous editions of the RenMAD Awards, reinforcing its role as a benchmark for renewable energy storage in Spain.
A Recognition of Magtel’s Leadership in the Energy Transition
Being named a finalist at the RenMAD Energy Storage Awards 2026 confirms Magtel’s commitment to a more sustainable energy model and to the development of key infrastructure for a modern, secure and decarbonised power system
