Magtel consolidates its leadership as a developer of BESS systems to ensure electrical grid stability

The rapid integration of renewable energy into Spain’s electricity mix has made energy storage an essential infrastructure to ensure system stability, flexibility and security. In this context, Magtel has consolidated its position as a leading developer of BESS (Battery Energy Storage Systems), approaching storage not as a complement, but as a structural asset of the power grid.

BESS systems for electrical stability in the integration of renewable energy

From the Engineering Division, Magtel develops BESS projects on a fully integrated basis, covering all phases of the lifecycle: technical consultancy, feasibility studies, conceptual, basic and detailed engineering, administrative processing, technical management and commissioning support. This approach enables the company to act as both a developer and a technology promoter, integrating storage from the system design stage rather than as a standalone solution.

Since 2025, Magtel has been involved in the development of large-scale BESS projects, both in stand-alone mode and in hybridisation with photovoltaic plants, reaching unit capacities of up to 49.35 MW and storage capacities exceeding 196 MWh. Among the most representative projects are Carmonita I and V (35 MW / 200 MWh each), IERON (11 MW / 62.5 MWh) and Cicerón (49.35 MW / 196.41 MWh), all connected to high-voltage nodes of 220 kV and 400 kV—one of the main technical challenges in the deployment of large-scale energy storage.

Magtel’s strength lies in its ability to integrate storage within complex electrical infrastructures. The company develops MV/HV electrical engineering, connections to existing substations, energy modelling of charge and discharge cycles, as well as the control and communication systems required to maximise performance and ensure the operational reliability of assets.

This expertise also extends to the development of evacuation infrastructure specifically for storage, such as the Los Ramos 30/220 kV collector substation, designed to jointly evacuate three BESS systems and a wind farm, incorporating advanced multi-client integration and grid optimisation solutions.

At present, the Engineering Division is working in this field on a high volume of projects involving the hybridisation of existing photovoltaic plants with BESS, the development of new stand-alone storage systems, and the adaptation and expansion of medium- and high-voltage substations and lines—key actions for the modernisation of the power system.

Magtel’s Engineering Division operates primarily in Spain, with a strong presence in Andalusia, supported by a multidisciplinary technical team with extensive experience in renewable energy and electrical infrastructures. This positioning reinforces Magtel’s role as a developer of critical energy infrastructures, capable of providing stability, flexibility and resilience to the power system, while effectively accelerating the energy transition.
