Since late 2018, when Tharsis Mining acquired the mining rights to the historic Tharsis, La Zarza and San Telmo projects, we have made a firm commitment to the sustainable reactivation of historic mines in the Iberian Pyrite Belt, with the aim of restoring mining activity in line with the highest standards of technical excellence, safety and sustainability.
Over these years, the company has invested more than €40 million of its own funds, as part of a sustained effort to revitalise mining activity in the Iberian Pyrite Belt, guided by a long‑term vision and a firm commitment to technical excellence, safety and sustainability.
This effort has enabled the creation of a highly qualified, multidisciplinary and cohesive team, which now comprises around 30 people and whose work has been key to achieving significant milestones. These include the definition of more than 220 million tonnes of polymetallic massive sulphides with significant contents of copper, zinc, lead, silver, gold, cobalt, sulphur and iron.
We currently collaborate with some of the leading international consultancies to define the most appropriate metallurgical processes to demonstrate the technical and economic viability of these projects. The objective is clear: to reopen the mines using a modern, efficient and environmentally responsible approach, generating employment, economic development and value for local communities. This approach reinforces our commitment to the sustainable reactivation of historic mines in the Iberian Pyrite Belt, aligning modern mining activity with the principles of sustainability, efficiency and value creation for the region.
Likewise, we are making a firm commitment to the discovery of new deposits in Andalusia, primarily in the provinces of Córdoba and Seville.
This work is carried out within a global context of growing demand for raw and strategic materials such as copper and cobalt, which are essential to the energy and digital transition. Europe has identified the need to secure a stable and autonomous supply of these materials, making projects such as those of Tharsis Mining a key element of the new European industrial model.
At the same time, the renewed interest in pyrite as a source of sulphur for fertilisers and industrial processes—particularly in a context of international logistical constraints—further strengthens the relevance of our assets.
At Tharsis Mining, we continue to move forward with responsibility, commitment and ambition. We are committed to innovative mining that combines respect for the environment with the creation of sustainable opportunities for current and future generations.
We are confident that the coming years will enable us to take the decisive step towards reopening our mines, restoring them to the leading role they played during the 19th and 20th centuries and to the place they deserve in 21st‑century mining.
