The Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO), through the Institute for Just Transition (ITJ), has provisionally awarded the tender for the Just Transition Hub of La Lancha 220 kV to the Ballesta Reversible Hydroelectric Power Plant project, with a capacity of 289 MW and a photovoltaic self-consumption system of 229 MW, developed by Magtel, involving an investment of around 500 million euros.
The ITJ’s awarding of this tender highlights the company’s commitment—particularly through its Foundation—to the Guadiato Valley and the north of the province of Córdoba, areas in need of infrastructure and investment to help restore their economic momentum.
The project has been recognized at the RenMad 2025 Awards as the “Innovative Project of the Year.”
Just Transition Hubs
Just Transition Hubs are connection points where access capacity to the electrical grid is allocated through competitive tendering, to be used by new renewable energy plants. This capacity is granted based not only on technical considerations but also on socioeconomic and environmental benefits for the areas affected by plant closures.
MITECO therefore assesses the projects’ contribution to the Just Transition Strategy and prioritizes those that minimize environmental impact, invest in circular economy initiatives or biodiversity improvement, and provide socioeconomic benefits to the region—such as promoting local and women’s employment, supporting local industrial, agricultural, or social projects, offering training for local residents, developing self-consumption, investing in the provincial value chain, and involving local investors.
About Magtel and BlueStorage ©
This project is part of the innovative storage solutions developed by Magtel through its BlueStorage portfolio, which promotes reversible hydropower as a key tool in the energy transition. The initiative maximizes the integration of non-manageable renewable energy sources into the power system and thus contributes to Spain’s socioeconomic development.
