Magtel Takes Part in the ATLAS Project to Promote More Flexible and Resilient Power Grids

The University of Córdoba (UCO) has launched the ATLAS project, an initiative aimed at transforming the management of electricity distribution networks through the development of an advanced computational control system. The project seeks to increase the flexibility and resilience of the power system in a context of growing penetration of renewable energy sources. Within this framework, Magtel, through its R&D&i Division, is participating as a collaborating entity alongside international institutions such as the University of Manchester, Aalborg University and the National Hydrogen Centre.

A Funded Project to Develop a New Network Control Method

The initiative, funded through the 2024 Knowledge Generation call of the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, will run until September 2028 and aims to design a simpler and more efficient control method capable of simultaneously coordinating numerous microgrids and anticipating multiple operational scenarios. This capability is essential to address the challenges arising from increasing energy demand, uncertainty in renewable generation, and the need to ensure stability in Power Electrical Systems.

Integration of Microgrids and Hydrogen-Based Technologies

Beyond improving network control, ATLAS incorporates a strategic line focused on optimising microgrids in which two energy models coexist: the conventional electricity market and the emerging hydrogen market. This integration will enable the development of solutions that support the coexistence of both systems, positioning hydrogen as a key energy vector in the transition towards cleaner, more flexible and sustainable grids.

Magtel’s Contribution: Technical Expertise and Knowledge Transfer

In this context, Magtel participates from a technical and scientific perspective, contributing its expertise and know‑how to the analysis and monitoring of the advances developed by the academic institutions involved in the project. Its contribution is focused on facilitating knowledge transfer and supporting the exploration of new control methodologies applicable to the future of distribution network.
