The railway is currently experiencing a renewed phase of growth in Europe. The need to move towards a more sustainable, efficient and competitive mobility model places rail transport at the heart of decarbonisation policies and the reorganisation of logistics chains. In this context, the railway is once again consolidating its role as a key element in addressing the energy, environmental and mobility challenges facing European economies.
Spain is not immune to this transformation. Over recent decades, the country has developed one of the most extensive high-speed rail networks in the world, significantly improving passenger mobility between major cities. However, rail freight transport still has considerable room for improvement, with a modal share that remains low compared to other European countries. Increasing the role of rail in freight transport therefore represents one of the major challenges facing Spain’s logistics system.
In this context, Eco Rail emerges as a company within the Magtel Group, with the aim of contributing to the development of innovative rail solutions in both freight and passenger transport, focusing on efficient, sustainable models tailored to current market needs.
In the field of freight transport, Eco Raíl is driving the development of rail motorways through its majority shareholding in the company RAIL&TRUCK STRAIT UNION. This project aims to launch the Algeciras–Zaragoza rail motorway, a strategic initiative that will enable full semi-trailers to be transported by rail between the south of the Iberian Peninsula and the Ebro Valley. This approach promotes intermodality between road and rail, improves the efficiency of logistics chains, and helps to reduce emissions and congestion on major transport routes.
During 2025, very significant progress was made on this project. First, the delivery, through financial leasing, of seven Euro6000 locomotives was completed, and these are already operating on the Spanish rail network. In addition, 150 T4000e wagons designed for the transport of semi-trailers were added, also financed through leasing. This rolling stock represents a fundamental element in enabling the start of rail motorway operations as the necessary infrastructure continues to be developed.
In parallel, Eco Raíl continues to develop its strategy in the field of passenger transport. In collaboration with ALSA, the company is analysing the opportunities that may arise in the new phases of the liberalisation process of high-speed rail transport in Spain. During 2025, a detailed analysis of the draft of this new phase of the liberalisation process has been carried out, along with progress in defining a market study that will enable the potential demand and the characteristics of the services that could be offered to be assessed.
All of this forms part of a strategy aimed at positioning Eco Rail as a relevant player in the development of rail transport in Spain, combining innovation, operational efficiency and sustainability. From this perspective, the company aspires to actively contribute to the transformation of the transport system, promoting solutions that foster more sustainable and competitive mobility for the Spanish economy.
