Magtel presents its roadmap for energy storage through pumped‑storage hydropower plants at RenMAD 2026

Magtel presented its vision for the development of large‑scale energy storage at RenMAD 2026. The company is committed to pumped‑storage hydropower plants (PSH). These facilities provide stability and flexibility to the power system, and their role is key in the context of growing renewable energy generation.

The presentation was delivered by Andrés Zapico, Magtel’s Director of Hydropower Projects, who outlined the key technical and functional aspects of this type of infrastructure, as well as the active role the company is playing in driving its development at a national level

During his address, he highlighted the importance of pumped storage. This technology strengthens security of supply and facilitates the integration of renewable energy. He also pointed to Magtel’s commitment to efficient and sustainable solutions, noting that the company is firmly focused on driving a genuine transition towards a more robust energy model.

Strategic Projects Presented

Magtel presented the progress made on two of its most representative pumped‑storage hydropower projects:

  • Grandas de Salime Pumped‑Storage Hydropower Plant (PSH)
    265 MW | 3,81 GWh | 15,2 h
An infrastructure located in this Asturian locality, designed as a key asset to provide high storage capacity with long discharge durations, enabling peak demand coverage and the management of renewable energy surpluses.
  • La Barca Pumped‑Storage Hydropower Plant (PSH)
    320 MW | 4,09 GWh | 12,79 h
Located in Tineo, Asturias, and featuring higher capacity and a significant energy volume, this plant strengthens Magtel’s strategy of delivering robust and efficient solutions for the power system of the future.

Commitment to the Energy Transition

Magtel’s participation at RenMAD 2026 highlights its role as an active player in the energy transition, committed to storage technologies that enhance system resilience and enable advanced energy management.

Pumped‑storage hydropower plants (PSH) have become one of the most effective tools for addressing the challenges arising from the growth of renewable generation, and Magtel continues to strengthen its position as a benchmark in their design, development and implementation.
