Magtel, through its subsidiary La Barca Energía, has been proposed by the Government of Spain as the successful bidder for the Narcea grid connection node to build the largest hydroelectric power plant in Asturias in Tineo, with an estimated investment of €323 million and an installed capacity of 320 MW.
The future La Barca pumped-storage power plant, designed as a large-scale energy storage system, will enable greater integration of renewable energy into the grid, improve electricity system stability and contribute to the decarbonisation of the energy mix.
The project, which is expected to generate significant employment, will incorporate former workers from the Soto de la Barca thermal power plant and forms part of the Blue Storage® initiative, recently recognised as a finalist in the RenMad Almacenamiento 2026 Awards for its innovative approach to large-scale energy storage solutions.
