TERRAVISION

Due to the rise of the digital and green economy and the need to improve accessibility, efficiency, and resource circularity in the EU, the raw materials sector is emphasized as a key point for sustainable development, with Earth Observation (EO) technologies as a fundamental tool.

Within this study framework is the Terravision project, which aims to create an integrated platform to enhance the entire value chain of critical raw materials applied to sustainable mining practices. The main strategic pillars of the platform are:

  • Large-scale EO data ecosystem to monitor the life cycle of raw materials.
  • Data standardization to enable comprehensive spectral analysis of EO and in situ data.
  • Development of dynamic risk maps and essential critical services for the supply chain (mapping of essential raw materials, mineral exploration, extraction rates in open-pit mines, etc.).
  • Promoting resilience and sustainability in the critical raw materials supply chain (based on the environmental and socio-economic impact of different mining operation phases).

Tharsis Mining is particularly focused on remote sensing methods supported by observations and in situ instrumentation to:

  • Explore raw materials.
  • Provide environmental and resilience indicators, mainly for waste dumps.
  • Assess in real time current and future risks related to slope stability, inclines, and rockfalls.

The project has a duration of four years, ending in 2027, and involves a consortium of 15 partners.
