Magtel: Pioneering the Construction of a Sustainable Future

With over 30 years of commitment to the environment and sustainability, Magtel has implemented a range of initiatives to position itself at the forefront of the energy transition, driven by a deep understanding of the challenges that have arisen over time.

In this regard, Magtel has developed four strategic pillars that guide its commitment and shape its vision for the future:

Renewable Energy: As a staunch advocate of clean energy and a necessary energy transition, the company has participated in numerous renewable energy generation projects, helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Energy Efficiency in the Industrial Sector: Magtel applies tailored solutions to meet the specific needs of each client and project, aiming to reduce industrial energy consumption and minimize carbon footprints.

Circular Economy: From its inception, Magtel has embraced a sustainable production and consumption model, promoting the reuse and recycling of materials and advancing the principles of a circular economy.

R&D+i (Research, Development, and Innovation): Magtel invests significant resources in R&D+i to identify and develop innovative solutions to environmental challenges in its projects, often leading in water management and waste valorization technologies.

Magtel’s various operational divisions continually integrate innovative technologies that enhance sustainability and environmental performance, thanks to the developments spearheaded by its R&D+i division. Some of the most noteworthy projects include:

FIC-FIGHTERS
FIC-Fighters: Waste valorization in the mining sector. The goal of this project is to demonstrate, at scale, a circular and systemic solution for regenerating seven local phosphogypsum stacks in Europe, targeting five economic sectors: batteries, packaging, construction, detergents, and fertilizers.

A pilot plant will be built to operate using two different approaches to valorize up to 700 tons of phosphogypsum/year. Magtel participates through its R&D+i Division, leading the construction and operation of the mobile pilot plant powered by renewable energy.

Partners in this Horizon Europe project include the coordinating entity IDENER, the University of Seville, Captura CO2, Persan, Cementos Cruz, CSIC, SCK (Belgian Nuclear Research Center), CIUDEN, and a total of 26 partners.

KODAIPEC
KODA-IPEC: Knowledge-based and data-driven agriculture tools for irrigation of permanent crops. This project aims to develop a smart and sustainable agriculture tool to assist Spanish farmers cultivating permanent crops (olive, almond, citrus, and avocado) in managing irrigation and fertigation efficiently, including the development of effective plant protection strategies.

The tool will leverage Big Data, Internet of Things (IoT), and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies to support farmers in managing multiple aspects of their crops. Magtel will present this project at the Al Andalus Innovation Venture Forum, to be held in Seville on September 24–25, 2024.

MAGBOAT PROJECT
The Magboat project was launched to research and develop a system for monitoring key parameters, aimed at supporting maintenance protocols for both floating photovoltaic plants and eutrophicated reservoirs planned for this type of installation.

The project will enable Magtel to contribute to energy efficiency and environmental protection through an ecosystem monitoring plan, employing devices to measure the impact of floating photovoltaic plants on reservoirs.

According to a report by MITECO, this type of installation could improve eutrophicated reservoirs by reducing algae content through shading.

To achieve this, a new unmanned floating vehicle (UFV) prototype will be designed and developed, equipped with sensors and devices to capture, process, and transmit the necessary data for analysis. This will allow the development of protocols for preventive and predictive maintenance of future floating photovoltaic installations.
