Technological innovation is now an essential condition for competitiveness, but it is also a responsibility. In sectors such as energy, water, agriculture, mining and defence, innovation is not simply about adopting new tools. It means transforming knowledge into real industrial capabilities: solutions that can be designed, built, operated and maintained reliably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The journey from an idea to its practical application is not straightforward. It requires collaboration between companies, universities, technology centres and public administrations; it demands investment, time and sound technical judgement; and it calls for a long-term perspective. For this reason, the success of innovation should not be measured solely by the number of projects launched, but also by the knowledge, experience and capabilities they leave behind within organisations and their wider ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several recent milestones illustrate this continuity. In June 2026, Magtel\u2019s facilities in Aer\u00f3polis, Seville<\/strong>, hosted the kick-off meeting for Carbon4LIFE<\/strong>, a project co-funded by the European Commission\u2019s LIFE Programme<\/a>. The initiative brings together eleven organisations from Spain, France, Denmark and Greece to develop solutions for the valorisation of woody agricultural residues, particularly olive tree prunings, transforming them into valuable products such as renewable biogas, biochar and sustainable substrates for agriculture and horticulture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The significance of the project goes beyond its technological developments. It demonstrates that the circular bioeconomy can only become firmly established when a complete value chain exists, one that is connected to the territory and capable of transferring results to an industrial scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CONTINUUM<\/strong> and PROTOBOAT<\/strong>, two projects co-funded by CDTI<\/strong> and CTA<\/strong>, have also recently begun. CONTINUUM<\/strong> will develop a cyber-secure digital twin, deployed on an Edge-Fog-Cloud architecture, to simulate, monitor and protect critical infrastructures, with applications in both industry and defence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PROTOBOAT<\/strong> will research and validate a new generation of autonomous aquatic drones designed to operate with greater autonomy, improved energy efficiency and reduced environmental impact. The solution will integrate Fog Computing, onboard artificial intelligence, intelligent navigation, environmental, bathymetric and structural sensing systems, onboard photovoltaic generation, a low-impact propulsion system and the capability to collect samples at varying depths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both projects are driven by a common objective: advancing emerging technologies until they become solutions with practical and tangible applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This same approach is reflected in AD-GRHID<\/strong>, a project through which Magtel has developed a hybrid plant combining photovoltaic generation, battery storage and renewable hydrogen, all managed through an advanced energy management system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mission Innovation has selected AD-GRHID <\/a>for inclusion in the Green Powered Future Mission National Pilots Report 2026<\/strong>, recognising it as one of Spain\u2019s initiatives aimed at improving the resilience and decarbonisation of energy systems. Furthermore, the project is scheduled to be presented by the Spanish delegation at the upcoming international meeting of the mission during CEM17\/MI-11<\/strong>, to be held in Riyadh. This recognition demonstrates how a pilot project developed at regional level can achieve international relevance when it successfully combines technological integration with practical usefulness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another example of technological maturity is FIC-FIGHTERS<\/a>, a Horizon Europe<\/strong> project focused on the valorisation of phosphogypsum through circular economy processes. During the consortium meeting held in Zagreb in May, progress on the detailed engineering phase was reviewed. The project aims to transform a complex industrial waste stream into secondary raw materials suitable for sectors such as cement, fertilisers, batteries, detergents and paper production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, the valorisation process itself includes the capture and sequestration of CO\u2082 within some of these secondary raw materials, adding a further link to the circular economy value chain while helping to reduce the environmental impact associated with both waste and carbon emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a clear example of how an environmental challenge can be addressed through industrial solutions that also create new opportunities for economic value generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All these projects share a common purpose. Technology is not an end in itself; it gains value when it addresses a real need, creates new capabilities and can progress beyond the demonstration phase. This accumulated learning enables organisations to tackle future challenges more effectively and to unlock new opportunities for industrial development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our environment possesses the scientific, industrial and business capabilities required to deliver projects of regional, national and European significance. The challenge is to maintain this ambition through continuity, collaboration and a results-oriented approach. Because innovation is not simply about imagining the technology of tomorrow.
